STUDENT EVENTS

Undergraduates play an important role in the SFS-SRC, and we are excited to offer up to 10, $600 travel awards to help fund undergraduate attendance at the SFS meeting in Detroit. We hope faculty and graduate students will encourage their mentees to apply for these awards, and that undergraduate attendees take advantage of all the SRC has to offer them at Detroit and beyond! Applications are due January 31st! For eligibility and to apply, please visit: https://freshwater-science.org/awards-programs/endowment-award-program. Please contact Wilfred Wollheim (wil.wollheim@unh.edu) with any questions.

Silent Book Auction
We are now accepting book donations for the Silent Book Auction. Consider donating a newly published book written by your favorite scientist, a regional aquatic book, or a classic freshwater science text. For contributions, please contact us via email or bring the book by the Silent Book Auction table the first day of the conference. Information and donation contact Martha Dee (mdee@nd.edu). And don't forget to bid on books during the conference to support the endowment awards!

Student-Mentor Mixer
Monday, May 21, 5:15 pm - 7:00 pm; No charge
COBO Center – Atrium

The student-mentor mixer is designed to facilitate interactions between students and experienced professionals. Mentors may include aquatic science professors, research associates, post-doctoral researchers, government employees, and private consultants. This mixer provides students a great opportunity to network and engage in lively conversation with mentors and peers in a relaxed environment. Each student will be assigned to a group, and all students over 21 will receive a complimentary drink ticket!

Live Auction
Tuesday, May 22 from 7:30-10:30pm

Don't miss out on participating in the Live Auction this year! We are looking for unique and creative donations from SFS members. Donations can be anything from artwork to pottery to beer-themed bird feeders (see Fall 2013 newsletter). All of the funds raised from the live auction go to the SFS endowment awards, which supports SFS student research and travel awards. We look forward to being entertained by our auctioneer Nick Aumen as well as a few karaoke stars! Please contact the live auction chair for more information, Sophie Higgs (sahiggs@ksu.edu).

Belle Isle Clean-up and Aquarium Visit
Sunday, May 20th 10:00AM to 2:00PM

This year the SRC is partnering with the Belle Isle Conservancy to help remove trash from Belle Isle. Participants will travel to Belle Isle from the convention center via bus, where they will collect trash for a few hours before taking a tour of the Belle Isle Aquarium.

Belle Isle is a 2.5 mile long island located in the international waters of the Detroit River, operated by Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Belle Isle is considered the "Jewel of Detroit" due to its natural resources and historic landmarks. Woodsy forests, lagoons, and wetlands encompass over a third of the island, providing sanctuary for wildlife and opportunities for nature enthusiasts in this urban oasis. The Belle Isle Aquarium, the oldest aquarium in the country, houses an impressive collection of Great Lakes fishes and the only aquarium to house all seven species of gar found in North America.
